ECHINOPSIS SCOPULICOLA: A MESCALINE-RICH CACTI WITH STUNNING FLOWERS
Echinopsis scopulicola (FKA Trichocereus scopulicolus) is a species of cactus native to Bolivia. One of several species containing the revered mescaline molecule, it is capable of invoking powerful psychedelic experiences. The most famous of these cacti is undoubtedly the fabled peyote cactus, probably followed by the San Pedro variety. However, there are numerous cacti that contain mescaline.
The Echinopsis scopulicola cactus can grow very large, up to 4 metres. It has large and very beautiful flowers that open during the night, and close again in the morning. In the wild, this allows them to conserve water during the long, hot, and dry days. For those that like their cacti less spikey, Echinopsis scopulicola is noted for its unusually short spines.
CULTIVATING ECHINOPSIS SCOPULICOLA
For those used to growing cacti and succulents, Echinopsis scopulicola should cause few issues. In fact, it’s a fairly forgiving plant to grow. As with many cacti, it prefers to dry out a little in between watering, even wilting slightly. Allowing it to dry in this way will reduce the chance of mould and fungal infections.
Repotting and fertilisation during the growing season can help to increase growth. Once repotted, allow the soil to dry out for a week or so before watering it for the first time. In doing so, you greatly reduce the chance of root rot.
